Well, here I sit. With the other screen open so I can check every once in a while to see where Brent's plane is. (The last check was somewhere over Alaska.) But, instead of Japan, Brent is off to Guam, via Japan, this time around.
He will only be in Guam for a night, then he'll be in places unknown - to me at least - on an aircraft carrier. Then they're going to drop him off in Bangkok, where he'll spend one night - hey, that sounds like a song. :)
So, I was thinking...hmmm...I know where Guam is - in the western Pacific Ocean, just in case you didn't know. I know that Guam is a US Territory. I also know that Guam has these super yucky brown snakes that Hawaii is trying desperately to keep off of their islands. But, other than that, I don't know anything about Guam.
Once again, the internet is where I go when I want to find things out. Here's what I found out...
-Guam was discovered in 1521 by Magellan
-The US got Guam from Spain in 1898 as part of the treaty after the Spanish-American War (which I might have to look up after this because I don't remember that war)
-It is the largest island in Micronesia
-It was captured by the Japanese soon after the bombing of Pearl Harbor - quick, what day? - and was held by the Japanese for 2-1/2 years.
-The people of Guam were treated pretty badly by the Japanese during that 2-1/2 years, but ironically now the biggest industry is tourists - primarily from Japan.
and the last bit of interesting information I found is:
-The governor of Guam just announced this year that he is changing the name of the island to Guahan. So far, it's pretty much just him calling it Guahan, but who knows what will happen in the future.
So, it's just me and Daisy here at home. She's good company. She doesn't talk much. She doesn't seem to mind if I stay in my jammies all day. She is almost always happy to see me. (She is, after all a cat, not a dog. Sometimes she's put out that I dared to leave without consulting her.) And she likes it when the house is messy because there are more places to hide. A perfect companion!
Now I must learn something interesting about Bangkok - other than there's a big chess game there.

I Guess this Means He Won
Do you remember how I drove for 13 hours all by myself? I do. It was not the funnest thing I ever did.
Do you remember how proud I was of myself? I do. Remember, it wasn't the most fun thing I ever did.
Well, I don't know if it was his competitive streak coming out, the fact that he really wanted to see Daisy, or that he wanted to sleep in his very own bed, but Brent drove for 13 hours in one day to get home. In one day.
I drove for a grand total of 60 minutes. Granted, it was coming into Pendleton, OR which is one of those horrible drop offs and I'm not used to driving Brent's tall truck so it was SUPER scary, but still. One hour.
But, we did get home safe and sound. It was great to have Saturday to relax and get back into life.
It was great to see everyone, but I am so glad to be home.
Next stop...Georgia! Woho! (And, we are sooooo not driving to Georgia. That would be like cruel and inhuman punishment.)
